The Law of Equality
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Many people around the world are familiar with these words of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. The law of Equality involves Liberty and is part of the definition of equality, not in conflict with it. Equality before God—personal equality—is important precisely because people are not identical.
Their different values, their different tastes, their different capacities will lead them to want to lead very different lives. Before God all are equal without judgement or prejudice.
Almost all of us are attracted to the idea of equality. This is because equality is more than just a political idea thought up by moral men and women, or an idea merely related to race, commerce, or gender. Equality is a cosmic law, a principle of life of the highest order, which originates in God, not man.
All men are created equal. It is equally true, according to the divine law of equality, that all life forms created by God are equal. This includes angels, devas, animals, plants, minerals and elements. We all are equal in this respect: each living being is created and sustained by the same divine, indwelling positive-negative creative life force of our Father-Mother God.
We are also equal in that each of us has a divinely mandated triune purpose that compels us to live, to think, to feel and to evolve towards ever-greater expressions of love. This is the divine trinity of being, knowing and acting; or in other words, life, light and love. Beyond these, there are real and imagined inequalities. But neither man nor beast, neither death nor destruction of any kind can destroy the divine energy and divine trinity which God has established in each of us, His-Her children.
Love is the key to healing mankind and nature. The law of equality is one of the keys to living the law of love. Let us replace thoughts and feelings of superiority and inferiority with those of divine equality. Let us envision all of mankind following spiritual laws just as God does and wills for us to do. By so doing, our joy and the joy of every living being in this world will be full. For God blesses us all, equally.
The Book of Genesis reminds us that when God created the world, God created humanity “in the Divine Image.” The soul imbued within each of us is equally divine and pure. The Jewish sages teach that this common ancestry reminds us we are all equal and worthy of the same dignity and respect.
Jesus teaches us that God loves all people and is present for each of us. Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Bahá’í, Jews, Christians and most other faith traditions share a basic tenet, which is to treat (love) others as you would be treated (loved). We take this belief to heart and will walk with our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.
We as faith leaders are convinced that we are here to love and serve in God’s name, to pursue a world of peace and justice, kindness and fairness, love and compassion.
